We will start the route at the mining heart of Meatzaldea, in Gallarta, and head to Galdames crossing the Montes de Triano (a protected biotope), known since Roman times for the abundance and quality of their iron.
The Pico de la Cruz is one of its peaks offering a superb panoramic view of the Galdames valley from its rocky and clear summit. In its foothills is the Arenaza Cave, with rock paintings dating from the Paleolithic period.
On the way back to Gallarta, we will follow the Iron Mountains Greenway, the largest in Biscay. The itinerary follows the route of the former mining railway and explores enclaves of great ecological value. Mining remains abound throughout the course, especially in the Barbadun River basin, a 15-km course that is a protected monumental site.
