The summit of Mount Balgerri is one of the balconies in Biscay. From its highest point, it offers incredible views in all directions: over the province of Burgos, with its Ordunte reservoir; over the entire Karrantza Valley; and even on the Cantabrian coast, with Santoña Bay as a reference point.
We started the itinerary in the Lanzas Agudas neighborhood. At its highest point, next to the Gailurretan lodge, we will leave the car and start walking along the marked path. The trail is wide and rises until you reach a beech forest: the Balgerri beech forest, the largest in Biscay.
We will continue for about 2 km, until a detour on the right with the sign for Balgerri. This fork will enter us between oak and beech trees until we reach a stone wall that we will leave on the left.
We will continue in the direction indicated by the wooden signs and monuments along a hill until we reach Portillo de la Brena, the foothills of Mount Balgerri and from where we will see its summit. A moderate grass slope will lead us to a hill with a water pond. From there, making a final effort, we will hike a slope to the summit of Balgerri.
We will return by the same route, to Lanzas Agudas.
